Evie's Desk: Plan Now for Emergencies

Printer-friendly version
The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina reminds us all of the importance of having an emergency plan for our families, particularly those with young children.

If parents calmly discuss what type of emergencies are most likely to happen, children will be less anxious. Even little ones can help stock your family's emergency kit with water, flashlights, first-aid supplies, blankets, and non-perishable foods.

Parents should designate two places to meet: one area right outside your home in case of a sudden emergency, like a fire, and another place outside your neighborhood in case you can't return home.

Make sure you're familiar with your childcare provider's or school's emergency procedures and that your emergency contact information is up-to-date. If possible, ask an out-of-state relative or friend to be your family contact so everyone can all check in with this person in case of a regional or statewide emergency.

Keep your valuable records in a waterproof, portable container, and make sure you have ample medication and supplies for family members with special needs.

Remember: Knowing what to do is your family's best protection in any emergency!
